The Art of the Flatlay

Let’s talk about one of my favorite in your wedding gallery and one of the most overlooked parts of your wedding gallery: the flatlay.

You’ve probably seen them before, those dreamy overhead photos of invitation suites, rings, florals, vow books, and heirlooms, all styled together like a mini piece of art. But what you might not know is that you can play a big part in making that magic happen.

Here’s what you need to know to get a photo-worthy flatlay that tells your story:

What Is a Flatlay?

A flatlay is a carefully styled, top-down photo of meaningful wedding details. Think about all the little details you bought that capture the essence of the day and your love story.

Why Flatlays Matter

You’ve spent so much time choosing the right paper, designing your invites, picking the perfect ribbon for your bouquet, selecting a meaningful scent to wear down the aisle. These things are part of your wedding day story—and the flatlay ensures they’re documented beautifully.

How to Prepare Your Flatlay

One of the most important things you can do is set aside the apropriate amount of time. Set aside 15-30 minutes in your timeline for your photographer to have enough time to style these objects into a beautiful photo. Have a box with all these objects together that way you can just hand off the box to the photographer when they arrive.

Your photographer will bring the eye and the styling magic, but you can make their job easier by packing a few things ahead of time:

Items you can include in your flatlay

  • Invitation Suite:Bring 2 full copies of your invite, RSVP card, details card, envelope with stamp. Whatever you printed!
  • Rings: Engagement ring, wedding bands, ring box.
  • Vow books
  • A few spare blooms & ribbon from your florist (ask them to set some aside!)
  • Perfume bottle
  • Jewelry
  • A meaningful heirloom: like a locket, handkerchief, or brooch

Final Thoughts

The flatlay is one of those thoughtful details that makes your gallery feel complete. It’s a quiet little tribute to your style, your story, and all the intention you’ve poured into the day.
